The Tirino Valley includes the towns of Bussi sul Tirino (345m asl), Capestrano (505m asl) and Ofena (531m asl), together with the provinces of Pescara and L’Aquila. The Tirino River is one of the most beautiful and clear rivers in Italy. It is located at an altitude of 350m asl. The Valley originates from a tectonic basin with an abundance of accumulation of lake sediments dating back to the ancient Quaternary Period.
In 1995 a large part of the valley was included within the area of the Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga. The territorial and environmental activities have been strengthened through the inclusion of the three sources of the River and the upper part of the river into the ZPS (Special Protection Zones) which are part of the community program titled, “Natura 2000”.
