Horse transhumance at Voltigno and sdijuno with the shepherds
On Sunday 1 June 2025, Voltigno will be the scene of one of its most fascinating and traditional events: the transhumance of horses. This historic event, which has its roots in the glorious past of the Vestine lands, transforms Voltigno into a living stage of history and culture.
The main experience of Pastoral Culture, transhumance today becomes a tourist and ancestral path that retraces the “calleso viariaes”, i.e. ancient sheep tracks. The Terre Vestine are characterized by vast summer pastures at high altitude, the precious mountain pastures (Campo Imperatore, Voltigno, Rigopiano, Valle d’Angri, Rigopiano). The use of this form of cyclical commuting of animals and men, better known as “transhumance”, already adopted in Roman times, seems to have actually been practiced since prehistoric times.
The roads through which the movements took place were the so-called “tratturi”, rudimentary roads almost always made up of unpaved paths, but simply dirt roads and beaten by the trampling of numerous animals in their periodic comings and goings, but still delineated in such a way as to form a system infrastructure sufficiently branched to allow transhumance from the various mountain areas of Abruzzo.
